Colony Worms is an educational website. This page explains what information the site collects, why, and what happens to it. It is written plainly rather than as legal boilerplate.
What we collect
When you use the contact form. We receive the name, email address and message you type, along with your IP address and the time of submission. The IP and timestamp are recorded only so we can identify and block automated spam.
When you leave a comment. WordPress stores the name, email address and any website you enter, along with your comment and IP address. If you tick the box to remember your details, that information is saved in a cookie on your own device so you do not have to retype it. Those cookies last about a year and you can clear them at any time in your browser.
When you simply read the site. Our web server keeps standard access logs: the page requested, the time, your IP address and your browser’s user-agent string. These are used for security and troubleshooting.
We do not use advertising trackers, analytics profiling, or third-party marketing pixels.
What we do with it
Contact form messages are emailed to us so we can reply. Comments are stored so they can be displayed on the site. Nothing you submit is sold, rented, or shared with advertisers.
Who else is involved
Running a website necessarily involves a few third parties:
- Our hosting provider, which stores the site and its database and keeps server logs.
- Google (Gmail SMTP), which delivers the email sent by the contact form. Their handling of that mail is covered by Google’s own privacy policy.
- Akismet, an anti-spam service, which checks comments and receives the commenter’s IP address, email and comment text in order to judge whether they are spam.
- Google Fonts, which serves the site’s typefaces. Loading a font involves a request to Google’s servers, which can see your IP address.
How long we keep it
Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely so that follow-up replies still make sense in context. Contact form emails are kept for as long as they are useful for correspondence. Server access logs are rotated and discarded on a rolling basis.
Your rights
You can ask us to tell you what personal data we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it. Depending on where you live, for example under GDPR in the UK and EU, or PIPEDA in Canada, you may have a legal right to these things. We will honour such requests regardless of where you are.
To make a request, or to have a comment removed, use the contact form on the site. Please note we may need to retain some information where we are legally required to.
Security
The site is served entirely over HTTPS. Access to the administration area is restricted to named accounts. No payment information is collected by this website at all.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes we will update the date at the top of this page.
